Patriotism and Our National Responsibilities - Speech

A nation changes when its people change. Honesty, discipline, unity and knowledge are our duties to Pakistan, inspired by the Quran and Iqbal.

Assalamu Alaikum, respected principal, honorable teachers, and my dear friends.

Today I want to speak about a feeling that lives in every heart that loves this land. That feeling is patriotism, and it is not only a feeling. It is a responsibility.

Allah says in the Holy Quran: “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:11) This verse tells us that a nation’s destiny is not written only in its rulers’ offices or in its borders on a map. It is written in the choices of ordinary people, in the honesty of a shopkeeper, the diligence of a student, the courage of a soldier, and the compassion of a neighbor.

Our beloved Allama Iqbal, the poet of the East, taught us that greatness begins within:

"Khudi ko kar buland itna, ki har taqdeer se pehle,
Khuda bande se khud poochhe, bata teri raza kya hai."

Raise your self so high that before every destiny is written, God Himself asks the servant, “Tell Me, what is your will?” A nation of people who respect themselves, who value their own character, is a nation that can shape its own future. Patriotism begins with self-respect and grows into service to others.

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you is responsible for his flock.” (Bukhari and Muslim) Each of us is a shepherd of something. For a student, it is the duty to learn. For a parent, it is the duty to raise children with values. For a citizen, it is the duty to obey the law, pay taxes honestly, and protect public property. For a government servant, it is the duty to serve without corruption. When every person carries out his or her own responsibility, the whole nation becomes strong.

Think of what our national responsibilities truly are. First, we must be honest. A country cannot progress on a foundation of lies and bribery. Second, we must be disciplined. Keeping our streets clean, respecting traffic rules, and queuing for our turn are small acts that show big respect for our homeland. Third, we must be united. Our ancestors built this country on the promise of unity, and our division is the greatest gift we can give to our enemies. Fourth, we must seek knowledge. Education is the weapon of the twenty-first century, and a nation that does not educate its children cannot defend its future.

Allah also commands us in the Quran: “Help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:2) True patriotism means helping our fellow citizens, whatever their province, language, or background. The Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded us that “The best of people is the one who is most beneficial to other people.” Let that be our national motto.

And so we return to the poetry that binds our hearts to this land. Hafeez Jalandhari, who wrote our national anthem, gave us these lines:

Pak sarzameen shad baad,
Kishwar-e-hasin shad baad.

Blessed be this pure land, blessed be this beautiful country. These words are not just a prayer. They are a promise, and every promise needs people willing to keep it.

Allama Iqbal also reminded us of the combined strength of faith, action, and love:

Yaqeen-e-mohkam, amal-e-paiham, mohabbat fateh-e-alam.

Firm faith, continuous action, and love can conquer the world. These three qualities are the national responsibilities I ask of each of you: believe in this country’s future, work for it every day, and love it sincerely.

My dear friends, our country is not a gift we received for free. It was won through sacrifice, through the prayers of our elders, and through the blood of martyrs. Our duty is to protect it, improve it, and hand it to the next generation stronger than we found it.

So let us make a promise today. Let us be the generation that changes itself, so that Allah may change our condition. Let us serve this land with honesty, knowledge, and unity. And let our hearts always echo the prayer of Iqbal:

Lab pe aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri,
Zindagi shama ki soorat ho khudaya meri.

May my life become a candle that lights the way for others.

Pakistan Paindabad. Thank you.

Wassalam.
