The WhatsApp username feature remains under discussion after Meta responded to concerns raised by the Indian government. The company said it had already included security measures before planning the wider rollout of the new system.
Indian authorities asked WhatsApp to avoid introducing the feature until it explained how it would prevent fraud, impersonation, and identity misuse. Officials argued that allowing users to connect without displaying phone numbers could create new opportunities for scammers.
Meta rejected those concerns through a company spokesperson. The spokesperson said developers evaluated potential risks during the design process. The company added that the required safeguards were built into the WhatsApp username feature before its public release.
According to Meta, users can currently reserve their preferred usernames. However, the feature has not yet become fully operational for everyday communication. The company confirmed that broader access will arrive gradually later this year.
Meta also explained that certain profile names will remain unavailable to regular users. Reserved names will include public figures, artists, verified Meta accounts, government organizations, and other important identities. This restriction aims to reduce impersonation attempts and fake account creation.
WhatsApp announced the WhatsApp username feature on June 30. The company said the update focuses on improving user privacy. It also confirmed that names associated with prominent personalities and senior government officials will receive additional protection against misuse.
Under the new system, users joining WhatsApp groups or contacting someone for the first time will not automatically reveal their phone numbers. Instead, communication can begin through usernames when appropriate.
Meta stated that anyone wishing to contact another person must know the correct username. This approach allows communication without sharing personal phone numbers.
