Huawei DRAM Project Reportedly Backs China Chip Expansion

Huawei DRAM project reportedly supports China’s memory production through SwaySure as demand and technology restrictions increase.

The Huawei DRAM project is reportedly supporting a major memory chip initiative in Shenzhen. Industry sources linked the effort to SwaySure Technology, a state-backed company. Neither Huawei nor SwaySure has officially confirmed the reported partnership or production plans.

Reports indicate the proposed facility will use a 12-inch wafer production line. It is expected to begin with a 28-nanometre process. The plant could produce 140,000 wafers each month. Semiconductor sources and the Semiconductor Insider account on X shared the latest claims. Wccftech described the report as plausible but said independent verification remains limited.

Industry observers noted these production figures were reported when SwaySure launched in 2022. They believe the information may describe an expansion instead of a new factory. The Huawei DRAM project has therefore remained subject to ongoing industry discussion.

SwaySure Technology was founded in March 2022. The company develops memory chips for consumer electronics, vehicles, and other technology sectors. The Financial Times previously reported that SwaySure operates within Shenzhen’s government-backed semiconductor programme. Sources also claimed Huawei offered technical guidance, employee support, and fundraising assistance. Huawei denied that SwaySure operates as its affiliate.

The company hired executives with extensive semiconductor experience. Chief Executive Officer Liu Xiaoqiang previously managed fabrication facilities for TSMC. Chief Strategy Officer Yukio Sakamoto formerly led Elpida Memory. Their experience could strengthen future DRAM manufacturing.

Huawei still relies on outside suppliers for many memory chips. A domestic facility could improve supply security if restrictions increase. The Huawei DRAM project also reflects China’s wider semiconductor strategy. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron Technology currently dominate global DRAM production.

Growing AI demand continues increasing memory requirements worldwide. SK hynix warned that supply shortages could become severe by 2027. No construction schedule or production timeline has been announced. Experts expect initial output to target mature DRAM products instead of advanced HBM technology. The Huawei DRAM project remains significant and important as industry attention continues.
