China's asteroid defense mission marks a bold step in planetary protection. Chinese scientists have begun preparing a major space mission to safeguard Earth from potentially hazardous asteroids.

The mission plans to deliberately crash a spacecraft into an asteroid before 2030. This approach goes beyond simple experimentation. Scientists aim to alter the asteroid's orbit relative to Earth. They may also affect its structure if necessary.

Li Mingtao, chief scientist of planetary defense at the China National Space Administration, leads this project. The research paper currently undergoes peer review in the Journal of Deep Space Exploration.

The spacecraft will strike the asteroid at approximately 9 kilometers per second. This speed exceeds the speed of sound by roughly 26 times. The collision is expected in 2029 or 2030. The related meteor will pass Earth at about 7 million kilometers distance.

A second spacecraft will accompany the mission. It will observe the asteroid during, before, and after impact. This observer will analyze detailed changes in orbit, shape, surface, and internal structure.

Chinese researchers claim this project holds greater practical value than NASA's DART mission. DART only created a minor orbital change of one asteroid around another. China's goal demonstrates the ability to alter an asteroid's path relative to Earth.

This mission represents a significant advancement in global planetary defense capabilities. It showcases China's growing expertise in space technology and international scientific collaboration.
