Bangladesh and China Strengthen Economic and Digital Ties

Bangladesh-China cooperation strengthens connectivity, renewable energy, digital growth, and local development initiatives.

For millions living south of the Padma River, Bangladesh-China cooperation has transformed daily life and economic activity. Travel that once depended on long ferry crossings became significantly faster after the opening of the Padma Bridge in 2022.

Built by Chinese companies, the bridge improved internal connectivity across Bangladesh. It linked major economic corridors and made passenger and freight transport more efficient. The project reduced travel barriers and supported broader economic movement across regions.

The Padma Bridge stands as a major example of bilateral development efforts. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, senior adviser to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Finance and Planning Affairs, described the project as a model of cooperation in an interview published in May. He noted that the bridge’s rail connection is expected to directly benefit around 80 million people.

According to Titumir, such projects improved urban services and lowered logistics costs. They also generated employment opportunities and strengthened national development capacity.

In 2024, Bangladesh and China upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. The agreement expanded collaboration across infrastructure, energy transition, healthcare, agriculture, digital economy, and people-to-people exchanges.

A key area of Bangladesh-China cooperation is renewable energy development. Chinese enterprises joined solar and wind power projects in Bangladesh. These efforts support energy diversification and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Bangladesh plans to raise renewable energy use to 20 percent by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. The country expects stronger collaboration to support future energy goals.

Digital development also became a major focus. The 2024 agreement supported the “Smart Bangladesh” vision through cloud computing and digital infrastructure initiatives.

According to Titumir, China contributed to telecommunications infrastructure, 5G readiness, mobile financial services, data centers, and cloud development. These efforts increased digital capacity and improved service reliability.

Beyond large-scale projects, Bangladesh-China cooperation also expanded through community-focused initiatives. In 2024, China and the United Nations Development Programme provided 1,425 sewing machines in Bangladesh. The initiative supported employment creation and increased household income, especially for women.

In 2025, Yunnan province funded a drinking water purification system at Udon School in Dhaka. The system now serves more than 500 students and teachers.

These projects show how Bangladesh-China cooperation continues shaping infrastructure, technology, and local development across Bangladesh. Progress remains steady, while opportunities continue expanding. The results reflect practical planning and meaningful impact.
