Samsung Electronics labor union faces membership decline

The Samsung Electronics labor union has reached a provisional wage agreement. However, the Samsung Electronics labor union now faces declining membership and internal shifts. Members continue leaving after the recent wage settlement. The situation has changed union dynamics across divisions.

According to industry sources, the Samsung Electronics labor union recorded 69,170 members at noon on the 28th. This marks a drop from 76,000 during peak negotiations. The decline exceeds 6,000 members in recent weeks.

The DS semiconductor division will receive performance bonuses up to 600 million Korean won. The DX division, covering mobile and home appliances, will receive company shares worth about 6 million Korean won. The Samsung Electronics labor union has seen faster departures from the DX division due to this gap.

The Samsung Electronics labor union must maintain at least 64,500 members to keep majority union status. It gained this legal position in April from the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Falling below the threshold could reduce its representation power in future talks.

Industry observers note that rival unions are expanding. The National Samsung Electronics Union now has about 20,000 members. The Donghaeng Union has grown to about 16,000 members. Both groups added members after the wage agreement.

The Samsung Electronics labor union saw different voting patterns during the agreement approval. About 80.6% supported the deal overall. However, only 21.1% of DX-focused members approved it. The gap reflects division-based differences within the workforce.

Union leadership has announced a two-track negotiation system. The Samsung Electronics labor union will separate DS and DX division issues. It will assign five executives to DS and three to DX. This structure aims to address different workforce conditions.

Chairman Choi Seung-ho stated that approval rates did not match member expectations. The Samsung Electronics labor union will hold a chairman reappointment vote on June 17. Leadership changes may influence upcoming wage negotiations and union strategy.
