Underground Fungi Reveal Hidden Life Deep Below Earth

Underground fungi form a complex ecosystem deep below Earth, according to new research from the University of Michigan.

Underground fungi are creating complex ecosystems hundreds of feet beneath Earth’s surface. Scientists found these organisms living among water and rocks in deep underground environments.

A new University of Michigan study suggests underground fungi are far more abundant than earlier estimates indicated. Doctoral student Quinn Moon led the research team.

Researchers examined water samples collected from gas wells about 1,640 feet below ground. They used genetic methods and microscopy to study the hidden microbial communities.

The team identified 689 fungal types, including 13 previously undescribed types. The findings expanded scientific knowledge about underground fungi and their diversity.

Scientists found about 250 fungal cells in a single drop of water. An Olympic-sized swimming pool could contain more than 12 trillion fungal cells.

Researchers also detected other complex organisms, including tardigrades and tiny worms. These organisms appear to form an active underground food web.

Some species consume other organisms, while others may live as parasites. The network shows that underground fungi support interactions within a complex ecosystem.

The findings provide remarkable evidence of life in deep environments. They may also help scientists understand underground ecosystems more clearly.

The study appeared in the scientific journal ISME Journal. Researchers described the discovery as an important step in studying deep subsurface life.
