WhatsApp Side Chat is being tested as a new feature that allows users to access Meta AI without leaving their current conversation. The update was reported by WABetaInfo and aims to make AI support available directly beside active chats.
The feature introduces a side panel where users can interact with Meta AI while continuing conversations with friends or family. This approach removes the need to switch between separate chat windows and keeps discussions uninterrupted.
One example shows how users may plan activities more efficiently. During a conversation about visiting a restaurant, they can ask Meta AI for opening hours, menu information, or table booking details. The AI responses appear alongside the main conversation instead of replacing it.
WhatsApp stated that the feature uses its Private Processing technology. According to the company, conversations between users and Meta AI remain private and cannot be read by Meta.
When someone opens a Meta AI conversation through the side panel, WhatsApp creates a temporary private thread. Only that user can view the thread. Messages are processed inside a secure environment and are not stored permanently. The report added that the data will be deleted automatically after a limited period.
The WhatsApp Side Chat feature reflects a broader effort to integrate AI into everyday communication while maintaining user privacy and control.
Meta is also testing another update for desktop users. The company is working on browser support for voice and video calls in group chats on Windows and Mac devices. This option removes the need to install a separate application.
Users will connect their computer to WhatsApp through QR code scanning. After linking, they can place calls directly from a web browser.
In a separate development, WhatsApp is bringing back message animations on iOS. Earlier versions removed these visual effects, leaving messages without animation.
A recent report indicated that the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS includes redesigned message animations and a dedicated settings option. The update appeared in version 26.24.10.70 through TestFlight.
This follows the introduction of the same control in Android beta. Users can manage animation settings through Chats and choose options for messages, emoji, stickers, and GIFs.
The changes show WhatsApp’s focus on expanding communication tools while keeping the experience simple and efficient.
